How to Choose a Medicare Insurance Broker in Boise: 5 Questions to Ask

If you're looking for a Medicare insurance broker in Boise, you're probably in the middle of Open Enrollment and trying to sort out your 2027 options. A good broker compares Medicare Advantage plans from several insurance companies, checks that your doctors and prescriptions are covered, and doesn't cost you anything extra.

I'm Mitch Lyman, an independent Medicare broker in Meridian, and I help people across Boise and the Treasure Valley, mostly by phone. Below are five questions I'd ask any broker or Boise Medicare insurance agency before trusting them with your coverage, plus what to expect when you work with me.

Why 2027 Is a Big Year to Have Medicare Help in Boise

A lot is changing for Boise-area Medicare members this year. The Saint Alphonsus Medicare Advantage plans are ending after 2026, so many Treasure Valley residents need a new plan by January 1. Other plans have new copays, drug lists and networks, which showed up in the Annual Notice of Change letters that arrived in September.

Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, and the changes you make take effect January 1. You can read more on Medicare's official Open Enrollment page. If you're on a St. Al's plan, my guide to the Saint Alphonsus Medicare Advantage plans ending in 2027 walks through your options. If you got a different plan-ending letter, start with what to do when your Medicare Advantage plan is ending.

5 Questions to Ask a Medicare Insurance Broker in Boise

1. Which insurance companies do you represent? An independent broker works with several carriers instead of just one. I represent companies such as Blue Cross of Idaho, Humana, St. Luke's Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare. No broker offers every plan, so it's fair to ask what's not on the list, too.

2. Will you check my doctors and prescriptions for me? This is the step that matters most, and it's the one that most often goes wrong when people try it alone. A good broker confirms your doctors, hospital and medications with the plans before you enroll, not after.

3. Does it cost me anything to use you? It shouldn't. Medicare Advantage brokers are paid by the insurance companies, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through a broker or on your own.

4. Will you tell me if my current plan is still the best fit? Sometimes the right answer is to stay put. A broker who recommends a switch every single year isn't really looking out for you.

5. Will you be there after I enroll? Questions come up in February, not just in November: a bill that looks wrong, a prescription that isn't covered, a referral you need. Ask who you'll call when that happens.

How I Help Compare Medicare Advantage Plans in Boise

Most of my clients never have to leave the house. Whether you live in the North End, Southeast Boise or out toward Eagle, we talk by phone, I gather your information, and I compare the Medicare Advantage plans available in Ada County side by side, including HMO and PPO options. Here's what I look at:

  • Your doctors and preferred hospital

  • Your prescriptions and pharmacy

  • Your total yearly costs, not just the monthly premium

  • Extras that matter to you, like dental, vision or hearing

You can learn more about the types of Medicare plans I help with, read why people choose to work with me, or visit my page for people looking for a Medicare broker in Boise. Already enrolled and having second thoughts? You can change Medicare Advantage plans during Open Enrollment more than once before December 7.

Medicare Insurance Broker in Boise FAQs

Is a Medicare broker free in Boise?

Yes. Brokers are paid by the insurance companies, so you don't pay extra for help, and Medicare Advantage premiums are the same with or without a broker.

What's the difference between a Medicare broker and an agent?

A captive agent usually represents one insurance company. An independent broker like me can compare plans from several companies, although no broker offers every plan.

When can I change my Medicare Advantage plan in Boise?

During Open Enrollment, October 15 through December 7, with changes starting January 1. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31 also allows one change.
