Medicare Advantage Plans in Idaho for 2027: What Changed and How to Choose

If you're comparing Medicare Advantage plans in Idaho for 2027, here's the short answer: start with what's changing on your current plan, then compare your doctors, prescriptions and total yearly costs across several insurance companies before December 7. The plan that worked well last year may not be the best fit for 2027.

I'm Mitch Lyman, an independent Medicare broker in Meridian. I help people across the Treasure Valley, from Boise and Eagle to Nampa and Caldwell, compare Medicare Advantage plans side by side over the phone, at no extra cost to you. Here's what's different this year and how I approach the choice with my clients.

What changed for Medicare Advantage plans in Idaho for 2027

This is a bigger year for change than most. A few things stand out:

Idaho Medicare Advantage plans for 2027: what I compare for you

When someone calls me to compare plans, these are the five things I check, in this order:

  1. Your doctors and hospitals. In the Treasure Valley, networks often line up with a health system, so one plan can fit your doctors and another can miss them. I check each of your providers with the insurance company for you, so you don't have to guess from a directory.

  2. Your prescriptions. Each plan has its own drug list and tiers, so the same medications can cost very different amounts from one plan to the next.

  3. Your total yearly costs. The monthly premium is only part of it. I look at the copays for the care you actually use and the plan's out-of-pocket maximum.

  4. HMO or PPO. HMOs usually ask you to stay in network and get referrals; PPOs give you more room to see providers out of network. I cover the basics in my guide to Idaho Medicare Part C plans for 2027, and Medicare's own booklet, Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans, explains them too.

  5. Extras that matter to you. Dental, vision and hearing benefits vary a lot, so I compare the ones you'll actually use.

Is there a best Medicare Advantage plan in Idaho?

People often ask me whether Blue Cross of Idaho, Humana or another company has the best Medicare Advantage plan in Idaho. The real answer is that there's no single best plan. The right one depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your health and your budget.

That's why it helps to work with someone who can compare more than one company. I work with several insurance companies in the Treasure Valley, including Blue Cross of Idaho, Humana, UnitedHealthcare and St. Luke's Health Plan. And if your current plan is still the best fit for 2027, I'll tell you that too.

Key 2027 Medicare Advantage dates in Idaho

  • October 15 to December 7: Medicare Open Enrollment. Your new plan starts January 1. If you change your mind, you can change Medicare Advantage plans more than once during Open Enrollment, and the last choice you make by December 7 generally counts.

  • January 1 to March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can make one change during this window.

  • Plan ending after 2026: You have a special right to join another plan through the end of February, but choosing by December 7 avoids a gap in coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Idaho FAQs

No. The insurance companies pay brokers like me, so your premium is the same whether you enroll through me or directly with the plan.
